When an important trend impacts verticals such as IT, supporting technologies affected by the trend are amended to accommodate new software, hardware or services that fit into the trend. These often become major selling points for supporting tech companies.
A good example of this happened two-and-a-half years ago when VMware came up with Lightwave and Photon. These effectively became “cradles” of sorts to accommodate containers from Docker and other companies, which were being used as replacements for VMware’s bread-and-butter virtual machines and hypervisors. eWEEK covered this extensively.
Containers, which are used to hold and deploy microservices and run cloud-native apps without needing a hypervisor, are the huge trend we’re discussing.
To this end, cloud storage and security provider CloudPassage on Nov. 27 released Container Secure, a broad set of automated compliance and security controls for containers. CloudPassage said that Container Secure is the only solution currently on the market that secures all three parts of container environments: container images, running containers and the container engine/host.
The announcement was made at the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas.
Comes Packaged in CloudPassage Halo Platform
The solution, which comes packaged as a core component of the CloudPassage Halo platform, ensures a monitored and secured containerized environment for enterprises. Container Secure covers five key elements essential to container security: host security, continuous image assurance, runtime configuration assessment, visibility/compliance and DevOps ecosystem integration.
Containers represent a major step in the evolution toward faster application development and delivery, also called agile development. Container adoption at the enterprise level has skyrocketed in recent years due to the ability of containers to provide faster and more uniform application development and deployment. This, along with greater ease of use, is why containers are a major development trend.
This trend has some hard numbers to back it up. In the 2017 edition of the Portworx Annual Container Adoption survey, 32 percent of responding companies spent $500,000 or more per year on license and usage fees for container technologies, up from a mere 5 percent in 2016. Industry experts expect container adoption to continue to grow in the coming years.
“Containers are exploding in popularity because they’re fast and efficient. The rapid adoption of containers has created a strategic imperative to secure containers during build time, before they are deployed into production, and then during run-time,” said ESG Senior Analyst Doug Cahill. “CloudPassage is providing robust automated security for every stage and level of container applications expanding protection across workload types for unified host-based security.”
Automates Security Across All Types of Clouds
CloudPassage Halo automates the security of VMs and hosts across private cloud, public cloud and data center environments for Fortune 1000 companies. With Container Secure, CloudPassage now provides the same automated and efficient security for the container ecosystem, delivering visibility, security and compliance across hosts, VMs and containers with a single platform and agent.
“Containers and their ecosystem represent an entirely new attack surface that is disrupting security and compliance processes as they are gaining rapid adoption,” said CloudPassage’s Senior Director of Products Alok Ojha. “Our customers need one platform to protect both hosts and containers running on them, and we are now able to deliver that with CloudPassage Container Secure.”
